Do you need classes to do yoga?


Question:
I asked my parent's if I could take yoga classes. My father suggested I take one of his yoga books and just do it at home.

Will using the book work just as well as being in a class?

Oh and does it make you healthy and fit?

Yes, a yoga book is a great way to learn yoga. There are also CDs available. Yoga makes you healthier, flexible, and toned. It is also very relaxing.

A great way to learn yoga is to try a beginners dvd or video. I got started in yoga with the "Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies". It's excellent. I worked out to the dvd regularly and eventually started practicing on my own. It really prepared me for more advanced yoga dvds. I've yet to take a class but I'm hoping to do so soon. So to answer your question, no, you don't need a class in order to learn. However, if you don't take a class, you need to make sure that you're learning from someone or something that will show you how to breathe right and how to do the moves correctly so that you don't injure yourself.

And yes it does make you more healthy and more fit. However, from my experience, unless you do more advanced workouts, you won't really lose much weight, if at all, with the beginners workouts. However, you will achieve increased muscle tone and flexibility, which is great, and you'll become much more aware of your body and all it's capabilities. It makes you want to treat yourself better. It's also a great stress reliever though and alot of fun.
