Whats better swimming or running?
Question:
Answers:
Running vs. Swimming
How does the energy used for swimming compare to that for running?
It all depends - for how long and at what intensity are you doing these activities? The amount of energy used during all forms of physical activity depends on the intensity you are working at, how long you perform the activity, and your body weight. Another thing to keep in mind with swimming is how efficiently you perform this exercise. If you are an unskilled swimmer, you will put more energy into the same amount of activity as a skilled swimmer because you are less efficient at swimming.
Exercise intensity is often measured in METs. A MET is a metabolic equivalent and 1 MET is equal to the amount of energy needed by a person when they are resting. Therefore, the more intense the activity, the higher the MET level would be. The following will give you an idea of the MET levels and energy you are using during swimming and running.
The following lists running and swimming at different intensities, followed by the METs, and then breaks down into the kilocalories used per hour by a person weighing 110 pounds, 154 pounds, and 198 pounds.
Jogging (5 mph, 12 min mile) METs = 8.6; 430, 600, 774
Running (6 mph, 10 min mile) METs = 10.2; 510, 714, 936
Running (6.7 mph, 9 min mile) METs = 11.3; 565, 791, 1017
Running (7.5 mph, 8 min mile) METs = 12.5; 625, 875, 1125
Running (8.6 mph, 7 min mile) METs = 14.1; 740, 1036, 1335
Swimming METs = 4-8; 200-400+, 280-560+, 360-720+
To give you a better idea of what intensity you are working at (especially with swimming), you can take your Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) throughout the activity. The RPE is a scale of 0 – 10 with 0 meaning nothing at all, 5 being strong, and 10 is the maximal exertion your body can handle. This scale will allow you to rate your own subjective feelings during exercise, which will then suggest whether you are working at a higher or lower intensity.

Swimming because you use just about every muscle in your body.
doing both at the same time solves all ur problems
swimming definetly its fun
but running you do for the sake of it
and its not fun at all
Swimming i think
swimming, less impact on joints, body floats and is evenly weighted.
skating or inline skating is better than running as well. so is bicycle. running is bottom of the list due to impact of joints throughout body.
for a quick weight loss running because you lose water weight sweating! they are both really good to one one day and the other the next good luck!
Swimming
Swimming...
it's low impact and yes, you use more muscles when you swim.
swimming because you don't sweat. :D
i think swimming is better it's way more funner than running.
Running. Sweating is healthy for you, and it's more strenuous.
Id prefer swimming.
Coz u wont feel sticky ^^,
Swimming.
It works out more muscles in your body. Water also provides more resistence than air does while you're running so you're giving more muscles a better workout.
swimming because you use more muscles AND you don't get your feet all messed up
if ur trying to lost weight, running...because it builds muscle and loses fat from all the sweating. swimming just tones the body because u cannot sweat in water.
depends(whats better for excercise or whats more fun) but in this case both are real good cardio vascular excercises. But i would have to say running because you can do it nearly anywhere and even on a treadmill.
they are probably the same. cause running workouts your legs and arm. but so does swimming. but in swimming you have to control your breathing
It depends. If you want to improve cardo endurance than run. If want to burn calories and havefun go swimming.
Swimming. It is a total body workout (arms, legs, back) it also provides you a cardio aspect, resistence and it is low impact on your joints. Swimming is the way to go if you can get to a pool
Swimming is better for you I have a cousin that ran marathons a lot and his doctor said that all the running he was doing was shacking his insides lose & that he should take up biking or swimming it was better for him.
You burn more calories swimming. You use many more muscles than when jogging. Plus their is no joint stress in swimming, unlike running which can stress your knees, feet, and ankles.
Swimming uses more muscles in your body than running.
So if you have the pool or body of water to swim in try it.
It also depends on what you are training for . Good luck.
Swimming is much easier on your body than running is. If you have some physical problem like bad knees, or are perhaps are an older person, swimming is an excellent choice.
Running is good if you have no problems like stated above. You can do it anywhere, it gets you outdoors, and you don't have to find a pool to do laps in.
I'd say swimming. Less stress on the joints, you keep cool, and you use more muscles.
Swimming. It is so much better on the joints. You don't hear about a swimmer getting a knee or hip replacement.
I would have to say running. Although I am an avid swimmer and runner, my body gets more of a work out by running. More muscle groups are worked out when you run as opposed to swimming. Your calf muscles, quadricepts, pectorals major and minor, rectus abdominus, external obliques, transverse abdominus, and other major muscles grups that I have not mentioned are all worked out when you run. It's like a full body work out. When you swim you get a woderful upperbody workout, but you sometimes neglect kicking your legs back and forth to work them too.
In my honest opnion you should do both exercises to fully work all your major muscle groups. Go running and then to cool down, go for a swim. Be sure that once you are in the pool, preform different strokes. Each is intended to work a different group of muscles on your upper body.
Swimming definately because you are using every muscle in your body and plus there is more resistance in water.
swimming.. it's less pressure on your knees and joints.
