How do I increase my iron level quickly?

Question:
I donate plasma or try to twice a week. More often than not, my iron level is too low to donate. I started taking an iron supplement, but it doesn't seem to help. I've been taking it for about 3 weeks. Is there any kind of food I can eat or another supplement to increase my level?

Answers:
I've been having the same problem all this year with donating blood, which I normally do every two months or so.
The last time I tried, I "liver loaded" for days, and had been taking iron pills, as well as multi-vitamins...Spinach, watermelon... all the stuff that is listed in iron-rich food lists.
Still didn't work.
My doctor did a full blood test battery for anemia and hemoglobin and stuff, and everything came up normal. I went back to the blood bank, but was still too low (they have higher standards of 'normal'). They suggested taking a year off (or just not donating any more), as it might be that the act of donating itself was the trigger causing the low hemoglobin count.

So try everything the other respodents have listed, certainly. But if it still doesn't work, it may just be your body telling you to take a break. Sorry to say it; I know how it must feel - really! And you have been doing GREAT things through all your donations thus far! (I was actually thinking about trying to donate platelets or plasma or something, but knowing they have hemoglobin limits too, I guess it might still be worthless!)

Good luck!
