Workout for someone with Sickle Cell Disease...?

Question:
First of all please do not attempt to tell me about the disease and what it does to your body or to ask my doctor. I have asked my doctor and recieved an answer that was not useful and I have lived with it for 29 years. I am well versed.

Any who, the issue is I am fat about 20 or so pounds. However all of the exercise mags and books are for people who are already in shape or are body builders. I am neither.

So, what is a good starter regimne for an overweight newbie attempting to do some upper body work (abs, pecs and arms) and drop a little weight in a healthy manner.

I will appreciate all serious answers.

Hello there...My mother is (sort of) in the same predicament as you are--and does not like the exercises in the magazines or books...So, she's asked me to help her out--and I'll be training her next week!! So, what I recommend is that you go EASY on yourself--at first...DON'T push yourself too much, for you'll HURT yourself! I would recommend doing a walking workout! There's a great dvd you can buy called, "Walk Away the Pounds" by Leslie Sansone...This is REALLY good, I have three of her dvds, and it helps! Also, you can do a power-walk in your neighborhood--or at the gym on a treadmill, and use free weights (or no weights), but do upperbody movements, like bicep curls, tricep extensions, and other arm movements that will work out your shoulders, and chest.
You MUST eat healthfully too! Exercise w/out eating well is not effective. Eat whole grain foods, veggies, fruits, lean meats, little or no red meat, fish...Don't fry--but rather bake, boil, or broil.

As far as other types of exercises, check out this website, it has a big list of all the various types of exercises you can do...It's for beginners, perhaps you can print out some these pages, so you can have it on hand when you go to workout. Click this link to see the site:

Finally, don't be discouraged if you don't see results at first...It'll take some time...Don't give up, be positive, and don't be afraid to ask people for help! It helps when you have moral support. You can email me if you'd like--if you need any help, other fitness resources, or advice...Take care!!
Physical Activity

Children should take an active part in any physical activity that interest them. Let them set their own pace.

Aerobic exercise like running, swimming, walking, and biking are okay. The body loses more fluid during exercise so it is important to drink more fluids.

Swimming in very cold water may trigger a painful crisis in some children. Before the child goes swimming, make sure the water is not too cold. If the water feels cold to the touch, it is probably too cold for swimming. Children should dry off with a towel as soon as they come out of the water.
