The hamstrings are a series of muscles behind each thigh that work to bend the knee.
They are frequently strained by athletes who hyperflex them during activity.
The best way to take care of them is to stretch them daily, and especially before physical activities such as running and sports (Touch your toes while keeping your knees straight - hold for 30 seconds while providing a slight stretch to the muscles). This combined with regualr physical activity, should keep the hamstrings in good shape.

Hamstrings are the flexor muscle in the upper leg. They allow you to "fold" your legs together, like you bicep "folds" your arm. They're in the back of the upper leg, right under the glutes, and they extend all the way to the knee joint. Here are some exercises for them:
