Don't laugh, because it may seem hokey, but if you can afford the "Turbo Jam" DVDs from http://www.beachbody.com, it's an excellent way to shape up your abs. Plus, it's really fun--like dancing--so you'll be more inclined to stick with it. I personally love Pilates, but a lot of people find them boring and just stop after a while.
With TJ, you're burning calories as well as toning the muscle, which really helps. If there's still much of a layer of fat overlying the abs, it won't matter what kind of shape they're in; they still won't show that well. Good luck!

well if you are not part of a gym, then i would say try out this video a couple times a week, as long as renting/purchasing an abs video (pilates, scultping etc)

you should do:
daily - cardiovascular exercise
every other day - 5 sets of 25 crunches, 3 sets of 15 cross crunches, & 3 sets of 15 lifts.(not daily)
if you just work out ur abs & dont do any cardiovascular exercise you will build abs, but they will be covered by fat... and this will make ur stomach appear larger!
