Grains vs starchy veggies?

Question:
is it better to: go over the daily recomended # of grain servings (not refines mind you) by having whole grain bread or better to have something like a potato (but that doesn't put you over, it gives you a veggie serving)?

Answers:
Actually, if you have eaten enough whole grains to meet your daily requirements, and haven't eaten the recommended 5 servings of veggies- then it would be more sensible to eat the veggie. It might also be better if that veggie were not a starchy vegetable either. If the other four servings came from a salad, then you might be better served nutritionally if you chose something like broccoli or green beans and passed on the potato. And you should definitiely pass on the potato if those other veggie choices were also potatos or corn. It's also worth noting that unless you eat the entire potato, skin and all, you are not getting the most of the nutritional benefits from it, and probably ought to make another choice. You need some greenery and yellow/orange choices instead.
When I did weight watchers they classed bread and starchy vegetables as the same value. I was allowed to eat as much salad or other vegetables as I liked but was restricted with potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn. You would be better off having a big salad with lemon juice on it. (no oil or dressing)
