Losing weight while working in a fast food?

Question:
I work in a fast food resturant. I am allowed to bring in my own food, however I get up way to early in the morning to worry about what I am going to eat between 9am and 11am. When I am at work, I eat salads or fruit and yogurt. Since I started working their I gained 20 lbs. (also after a divorce). I walk 3 miles every day, plus some light freeweights (3 lbs). I have put in exercise videos and done the complete workouts. I eat 3 meals a day and two snacks. Everything is usually low cal, with occasional scoop of ice cream every other week.

Why can't I lose the weight? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answers:
I was in the same boat as you! Right after my ex and I split up I gained almost 30lbs (and at 5'2 it really shows!) while working in a restaurant.

It is so hard to maintain/lose weight when you are working in food-service, not just because there is food at your disposal, but because the constant activity leaves you pretty dehydrated- often this thirst is misinterpreted as hunger! I have the same issue, but I try to focus more on low-sodium/low-fat and less on low cal. Low cal foods are often loaded with salt and sugar to make them taste better. Be sure that you are drinking lots and lots of cold water and getting your daily supply of fiber and really watch that sodium!! Good luck and remember that however long it took to gain the weight, is at least how long it will take to lose it, so don't get discouraged!
I sounds like your body is used to the usual low-cal food and 3 mile walk..like a routine.

Keep eating the low-calories but you need to increase the exercise. I cycle for 20 miles every day and I still have to increase this now! You might also want to further vary your workouts, try some swimming (which is really good for you), running instead of walking, or cycling..take up a sport to stop you getting bored of the exercises...

Good Luck!

Working in fast food doesn't mean eating it. The best range to lose weight in is 1 to 2.5 lbs a week. This will allow your body to accustom itself to the loss and the skin to regain its prestretched stage. Losing weight too quickly will cause the skin of abdomen, chest and inner thighs to sag, possibly dramatically. I don’t personally believe in any of the fad diets that keep showing up. I think that they put your body into an unhealthy famine mode which will cause you to gain the fat right back if you start to eat normally again. The best idea is to eliminate all junk food. You can do a cheat day if you need to but don’t go overboard. Eat balanced meals of reasonable size. Overeating will cause your stomach to be too large and you will still feel hungry when you’re not. Also have lots of healthy snacks during the day. Ideally you’ll want to eat 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day. Carry food with you so you aren’t tempted to eat unhealthily when you’re out of the house. And don’t buy unhealthy foods. Get foods that are low in bad fats—we do need fat to survive but not saturated fat. Minimize the processed flours and sugars, no white bread, no sugar. Choose leaner meats and protein sources. Don’t expect to eat pizza and burritos all the time and lose weight. And eat tons of vegetables. Eat salads, steamed vegetables and raw vegetables too. You can’t eat so much celery that you’ll get fat. Don’t eat too much fruit or things containing high fructose corn syrup. The reason is that fructose is hard on the liver because it can only be metabolized there. You can eat fruit during or after a workout. Don’t eat late at night because your body will turn it into fat. Eat a smaller amount of calories than needed to maintain your weight. You have burn more than you intake. Always exercise. Cardio especially, but weights are good too. Don’t give up. You’ll be glad you chose to lose the weight.
