Yes! Running will definitely make a difference and it is a very good exericise.

Just as long as you're eating a healthy diet and you are burning enough calories to maintain your weight or you are burning more calories than you eat, you won't gain weight.

Running helps you increase endurance/stamina and strength as well as avoiding the risk of becoming unhealthy.
Running is a great excercise especially for your cardio. It will keep your heart healthy and keep you in shape. It is always better to mix up your excercise and not just do one thing.
It's a great exercise, and does burn calories, but walking and light weights are actually more effective if weight loss is your goal. When you run long distances your body can burn more muscle than fat, and it's muscle that is eating away fat while you sleep or just sit around. If you decided to run, then start out SLOW and work up slower when it comes to distance or you could end up out of commission for a matter of weeks or months with Achilles or knee problems. Running is high impact, cycling might be a better idea if you are heavyset and looking to lose weight. Cycling 12 miles a day is actually how I went from 220 to 180lbs.
yes
