Whey protein powder and frequent weight training. If you don't want to consume 'powder' or any supplements like that, then you're suggestion is probably the best option.
pre-workout meal with carbs
weight lifting (fewer reps with heavier weights)
post-workout meal with at least 20 gr whey proteins and some complex carbs
pre-sleeping meal with milk proteins
Overall protein intake: 1 gr per pound of weight per day
