How to stop feeling self-conscious at the gym?

Question:
I feel stupid-looking at the gym. It gets better the more I go, but I have this weird obsession that everyone there is looking at me and thinking I look out of place. I feel especially self-conscious when I lift weights. How can I get over feeling this way?

Answers:
Girl, just don't sweat it. (No pun intended!) Most everyone there feels the same way you do, except the few ppl who are secretly hoping that everyone IS looking at them.

Everybody is at the gym for the same reason you are. Change your outlook on yourself and boost your self-esteem and then it wont matter bc you are beautiful..sweaty gym clothes and all!
Wear headphones and listen to some music.
Stick 'kick me' stickers on the backs of the really fit people :-)
Easy, try looking at everyone else and you will realize nobody is watching anyone!
Keep going the gym and get the body you want then you'll see people will have a good reason to look at you.
try not to look around and cross paths with many people until you feel more ready too, also everyone in there was in your same place once. taking a friend with you would really help to keep things at a more comfortable area, that may help you both have a good time staying healthy
Lol don't worry about that or you'll end up dropping a ten pounder on your head, which wont leave you self-conscious but unconscious.
Either the head-phones, or bring a partner.
I focus on my work-out, and something that pisses me off. It helps motivate me and when I'm done I no longer have the energy to be pissed about whatever I was thinking of. Not exactly Freudian, but if it were I'd be famous.
Work out w/ a trainer, obviously you can't be doing anything wrong w/ a trainer there (but watch out, some are unqualified and just waste your time/hurt you)

Or try to work out when nobody is there, at around 8 pm, nobody goes, or like 1 pm

Or you could start doing the looking haha, look at other people and see what they're doing and you might feel better
More people have the same conscious feeling you are describing. They just don't show it. Think of it this way, most people wouldn't spend 50 bucks a month to go look at other people. They would go to a mall, its free.
Well look at it this way, if they are looking at you its probably a good thing. One they know that you are there to make your self feel better and to look better. As so are they. You may not see it, but everyone is there for the same exact reason. Two, you know that you are getting more fit and healthy with each visit. So don't be worried about what people are thinking, cause chances are, they could be thinking the same thing you are!
Imagine that you look how you will in 6 months time. :P
You're there at the gym for almost the same reason everybody else is! The more you think everybody is staring at you, the more self conscious you'll become OVERALL and people will be able to tell from this. Wear clothes you feel comfortable in which also allows you to do exercise in and it is a good idea if you listen to music to take your mind off things. Think positive- you have to accept who you are. Don't let other people try to change the way you view yourself. If you're confident on the inside, it will show on the outside!!
I used to feel the same way. Just think probably half the people in the gym are feeling the same way you do. Try to move past it by putting your mind on something else.
