How does my elliptical count calories?

Question:
I have a Precor elliptical with a stationary handlebar as well as moving handles. I would assume that I burn more calories using the moving handles than I would if I used the stationary handlebar. The elliptical is all computerized so does it recognize when I am using the moving handles instead of the stationary handlebar?

Answers:
Yes, I think so. The calorie count is basically an educated guess. It is useful to see if you can burn more than last week, but not a guarenteed amount. If you eat a 200 calorie candy bar and then burn 200 on your trainer . . . well, it just may not work out the way it sounds! You might still gain weight!
