Why am I gaining weight when I'm exercising and eating less?

Question:
Just last week I weighed 113 pounds, before I started field hockey. The only physical activity I did was swimming for about an hour a day. Then I started going to field hockey camp for about 5 hours a day. I am very sore every day and kept thinking of how much weight I was probably losing. Today, after a week of field hockey I now weigh almost 119 pounds. I'm so disappointed because I thought I would be losing weight, and now i'm gaining weight like crazy. Why is this? Should I stop playing field hockey and go back to swimming? This is really driving me crazy, I don't want to be heavy!! How can I stop this drastic weight gain?

Answers:
Don't freak out. Muscle weighs more than fat. The best way to see if you are really gaining is to check your body measurements. Measure your waist, hips, upper arms, chest, etc, then wait a week and do it again. You may gain muscle mass in your legs, but they will look firm and beautiful. Don't stop working out because if it.
Also, make sure and eat the right carbs and lots of protein.
Muscle ^_^ uve been soooo active ur body is destroying the fat and putting muscle look at ur stomach arms and legs ur stomach should be skinny with some fath but muscle tighten it and see then tighten ur arm look at the muscle tighten ur legs muscle...Good job im heavy but im having trouble staying commited...UR AN INSPERATION
That all depends on what your eating, are you eating more carbs and fat then your burning while exercising. What are you eating.?
Muscle weighs more than fat, your slimming off fat, and gaining muscle, strength muscle though, thats why its not a huge weight increase. Youll be alot slimmer, but you might gain a few pounds, nothing to worry about
You're probably gaining muscle.

Trust me I know, I'm getting thinner, losing inches, but the scale has only budged one pound in a few weeks.

Measure your waist each time you weigh yourself, if it gets smaller then you're gaining muscle and losing fat.
hmmm. maybe since your exercising your gaining muscle and muscle weighs more. and your not heavy, im 16 and weigh 117. so don't worry about it.
IT doesnt really matter how much you eat. It matters what you eat. A good diet and excersise helps. I lost almost 30 pounds in abouit a month. If i can do it, you can to

P.S. ITs ok you dont need to freak
Rejoice! You're gaining muscle, honey! Last summer I did a 5-day hike on the Appalachian Trail (10-15 miles per day) and returned home to find I'd gained 3 pounds ... and that my thighs and calves were more sculpted than they'd been in a long time. Enjoy your strong (and hot) new body!
Your gaining weight because your gaining muscle... Muscle weights more than fat...and .

If you don't eat..your body will hold on to everything you do give it because it goes into starvation mode. It doen't know you are going to feed it again so it horts.

Helpful Tips for weight loss:

1)A good way to loose weight is to use a calorie counter watch

Keep to a 1,200 food intake

Add 1,200 plus 3,500 (equals one pound of fat) ...and that is the total amount of calories you need to burn each day. Its actually really easy once you start watching the numbers and it doesn't seem like work or exercise. Its just a matter of changing the way you think about loosing weight.

I use this method when i gain some pounds. The first time I did this I went from 168 to 127

2) Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.
exercising is good way to loose weight but eating less only make you gain weight so the key is to eat healthier
You could be gaining muscle, which weighs more than fat. You could also have more water in your body when you weighed yourself now than you did when you weighed yourself last week. Also, as a woman, I have noticed that my weight tends to fluctuate with my menstral cycle. I tend not to worry too much about weight fluctuations of 5-10 pounds. More than 15, then I gotta check myself.

P.S. Field hockey sounds like fun!
Were there changes in your diet? If everything else remained constant (except for the exercise and lifestyle), you're probably building on lean muscles. Muscles weigh more than fat. You can also ask people who haven't seen you for quite some time if they have noticed any physical changes in you. Try fitting some some old 'tight' clothes, and if they fit you right, then your gain was muscles.
It's normal if your in your 14's or 13's. If that's not the case, then its not eating less, it's eating right. For breakfast try eating cereal (whatever brand, Special K is the best) because it doesn't fatten much and cereal has a lot of vitamins and minerals. Also, don't eat any junk food and eat foods that are low in trans fat, saturated fat, and carbohydrates. Do excerzise also daily, for at least an hour. If you follow these steps you should be able to lose weight.
You must be building muscle, which weighs more then fat, also, I think you should be eating more when you're so active.
