How do I gain weight?
Question:
I know a zillion people have asked this already but none of the answers I found were helpful. I'm 19 years old, 5' 7", and only weigh 102lbs. My BMI is 16; it should be at least 18.5 for a healthy person. I literally look like a skeleton! I'm eating like there's no tomorrow (regular food and junk food) and still can't gain ANY weight! I'm in college, so of course campus food kind of limits my choices, but I need advice on what to eat/use to gain some weight. Also I'm only a 32A in juniors bras and a 30A in women's bras. Can somebody help? I'm going crazy from low self-esteem, terrified that my breasts have stopped growing, and probably won't be able to afford surgery anytime soon. It's also really affecting my social life. Can I get some advice please? Oh, and only serious answers please. This is really important to me, and, of course, I'm worried about my health as well as my appearance.
Answers:
That sounds like one crazy metabolism... I will assume that you don't have multiple personality disorder (where the other personality is bulimic). I will also suggest that you see a doctor about this if it really concerns you - there is always a chance there is some actual medical problem.
However, ifyou are just genetically unlucky... one sure fire way to gain weight for someone as skinny as you is to gain muscle. By doing weight bearing exercises. Come up with a workout routine that works all the major muscle groups and do it 3 times a week. Make sure to eat a good amount of protein.
try some energy bars. they give you vitamins you might not be getting and also help you build muscle mass, not fat.
if you are REALLY eating all the time and not gaining weight, and you're not just saying that to brag that you are skinny...then you should go see a doctor. you could have low thyroid or a number of other problems.
but, what's so wrong with being skinny? my BMI is also 16. just because it is not in the "normal" range, does not mean that you are unhealthy. your healthiness depends on what you are eating and how much you exercise, not what a number says.
You probably have a really high metabolism. It will slow down at about age 25-30.
If you really want to gain weight now, I suggest you speak with a dietician who can arrange a personalized diet for you according to your body type.
Make sure the dietician you select is also an M.D.
Wish I was in your shoes. I have trouble keeping the weight off.
The FIRST thing you should do, is see a Doctor to make SURE there's nothing systemically wrong with you. Then, ask him/her- why you can't seem to gain weight- & WHAT you can do about it. And FINALLY, if you ARE Healthy, & just have a hyper metabolism...-Then STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT, & get on with your life. Most people would KILL to be in the position that you're in- where you can eat anything you want- and don't have to worry about dieting... -EVER! :)
