How many days can you starve yourself?

Question:
is it three days without food and 5 days without water? i'm trying to loose weight. i know it's not healthy to do this but i am desperate right now.

Answers:
Fasting is safe and healthy ONLY when done in moderation. It's possible to get undernourished, and by not eating, your body may take nutrition from your fat AND your muscles, so when you do it for too long, it can be very detrimental.

Basically, your brain realizes you won't be getting food anytime soon, so it stops telling you that you're hungry. It's a defense mechanism that helps prevent people from going insane when they can't eat for long periods of time. Because of that, it's possible (but VERY dangerous) to go for weeks without food, but the 3 days thing is the longest you can live without water.. I would NOT suggest going without water, though.

More importantly, to a very high degree, you should weigh as much as you feel happy with weighing.

As long as you are at a weight where you are healthy, the most important part is that you are HAPPY with your weight... not that you "should be X pounds", but that no matter what you weigh, you are happy with that instead of striving to be a size 2 or something like that

That being said, if you want to lose weight, exercise is a really good (and safe) way to lose weight. In addition to that, I would recommend meeting with a nutritionist or dietitian to see if there is something else that may benefit you more.
dont' starve yourself to lose weight, your body will only store fat and cause you to gain weight. eat 5 small meals a day, drink plenty of water and walk everyday for 30-40 minutes.
Max is 3 days for water, a week for food. Please dont attempt this, you could cut down on your meals, and cut snacks out, but dont starve your self, it hurts your body
You can go days without food, but I would definitely drink water.

The 'master cleanse' is nice, but you may lose muscle mass and thus it's easier to gain body fat after wards.
it's probably 3 to 5 days without water.
you can go long without food, depending on how fat you are.
if you're desperate then you're probably fat, so you could probably go months without eating.
If your trying to lose weight, DONT starve yourself, please. Make healthier food choices and make sure to get exercise in. Starving yourself is NOT the answer to losing weight.
Your body can handle the pressure of starvation for about 2 weeks and 1 week without water. It isn't healthy to do it, but you will lose weight. If you were put in Antartica without any food, your body would take the fat from the areas of fat and use it to keep itself warm and to keep your stomach stable since you have the fat.
oldtimekid is right. In addition, I will add that you can go much longer without food than you can water. How long you can go without either depends upon your physical condition and the other physical conditions, such as heat or cold, surrounding you.

People have been known to go over a month without food; but starvation is not a good way to lose weight, because it changes the set point of how many calories you body thinks it needs, with the end result that the minute you start eating again, you will not only regain the weight, but gain even more!
