Splenda question! PLease help! (no haters)?
Question:
OKay so I heard that splenda really isn't a calorie free sugar but has some.and I was wondering if this is true and so how many carbs r in 1 tbsp?
Answers:
Nothing is actually "zero calorie" -- at some point the calories kick in. (Meaning, something may have "zero" calories for labeling purposes at a certain quantity, but at some point you get enough of the item and that changes...if that makes sense.)
For Splenda, according to the official Web site, there are about 96 calories per 1 cup of the granular form, and, also from the Web site, "The calories come from maltodextrin, a natural carbohydrate used to bulk sucralose so that it measures one for one in sweetness to sugar." So with that tiny amount of calories/carbs in one cup the amount in a single tablespoon would be negligible...There are 16 tbsp in 1 cup, so there are 6 calories in 1 tbsp of Splenda; if those calories are attributable entirely to carbohydrate, that still means there is only 1 1/2 grams of carbohydrate per tbsp of Splenda. However, these carbs are not absorbed in digestion and therefore they can be discounted if you're counting carbs.
Hope that helps.
no calories as far as I know. My husband uses it ALL THE TIME!
According to 'Splenda' It's 0 calorie, and the body does not recognize it as a carb, so for the sake of digesting, it's carbless as well. Their quotes below from homepage.
"SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, or sucralose, is made from sugar through a patented, multi-step process that selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms. The result is an exceptionally stable sweetener that tastes like sugar, but without sugar's calories. After consumption, sucralose passes through the body without being broken down for energy."

SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener tastes like sugar because it's made from sugar. SPLENDA® Products contain sucralose, a sweetener that is derived from sugar and is 600 times sweeter than sugar, but isn't recognized by the body as a carbohydrate.

I never took the granulated form into account as ljb did above. I was looking into the powder form. Guess it depends which version you use. =)
I don't think it actually has calories in it, but everything artificial in it actually makes it worse for you body than if you were to just eat the sugar.
