I've heard many things about the effects of carbonated beverages on athletes, including that carbonation lowers your endurance. I was wondering if there was any scientific documentation supporting the fact that carbonation does in fact lower your endurance.

Affects your breathing. With a load of gas in your gut you have less room for lungs to hold air. I hear that it goes beyond that and will decrease your breathing even if you have not recently consumed anything carbonated.
In competitive swimming, carbonation was outlawed by the coach.
