Salt Daily Intake?

Question:
They say you should take in 6g of salt a day, but ive heard the average person takes in about 20g of salt!!
Is this true? How can i prevent my intake of salt being so much? And if its not true what is the average amount?
Thanks

Answers:
The American Heart Association recommends 3g per day. 20 sounds a bit high (even for Americans). But I'd guess it is about 9g on average.

One of the best ways to reduce salt intake is to taste food before salting it. Many people just salt food they get out of habit, when in fact it may be salty enough. You can also replace salt with potassium alternatives. I don't think they taste as good, but if you cut them with the real thing, they aren't that bad.

Don't forget that you do require salt to be healthy. If you can't seem to cut your salt intake to a "healthy" level (many doctors are actually debating the risks associated with salt intake) just drink more water. By consuming extra water, you will remove the excess salt from your body.
This varies from country to country believe it or not. I think I heard recently that Scotland allows 6g daily which three times higher than what the USA allows. It was also stated that they wanted to reduce it in Scotland but I guess they have a lot of salted fish produce.

Here's a UK link that says the 6g, u can find plenty for USA with their 2g recommendation. Many people want this lowered even the 2g in
