Any former vegetarians? I need advice from you!?

Question:
I am a vegetarian... but for various reasons I'm thinking of starting to reintegrate meat into my diet. I need advice on how best to do this.
The reason I started thinking about this in the first place is because I'm going to a developing country where meat is the primary food of the local diet. I'm not so worried about starving because I can't eat any of the food prepared (I could probably find alternatives)... but I'm worried about unintentionally insulting people when I turn down their food and hospitality.
Furthermore, if I do HAVE to eat dishes with meat in them for any reason, I don't want to just all of a sudden add it to my diet. It could shock my system... which will already be experiencing many new things in a new country.
SO:
I was wondering if anyone here used to be a vegetarian and then started eating some meat again. How did it effect you? Did you feel physically/emotionally different? Did you gain or lose weight?

Answers:
i`ve tryed to eat meat again...thru peer pressure..lets say it didn`t go well....the guilt was too much to bare(two days three meat included meals)
Now i`m happy knowing whats right for me
EAT MEAT!
Just try to eat white meat. Such as like.. Chicken, tuna, fish, etc.
I can't help you that much, I wasn't a longtime vegatarian. Decided I liked bacon too much not to eat it. I still don't eat beef though. But when I decided to eat meat again, I didn't feel different at all. I was slightly less hungry too. I think you'll be all right.
It cant be that bad, start by adding small portions of meat to your meals.
i thought about starting to eat chicken again a few months ago, but idk it just feels wierd,
I was never a vegetarian, but I stopped eating beef for a while and when I started again, I got soo sick!!

Just go slow - reintroduce very small portions of lean meat to your vegetarian meals and gradually work up to that 3-4oz. cut.

I also take an enzyme product called ThreeLac to help keep everything, uh, running smoothly.

Good luck!
i slowly added it to my diet.
i really needed the protein.
i was upset at first because i wasnt used to umm 'animals'.
i lost weight.
because eating more meat i dropped alot of breads and things i didnt need in my diet.

goodluck.

I didn't experience any bad health effects once I started eating meat again. I probably did gain a little weight, but not too bad. I still steer away from red meat in general. Chicken and fish, as long as it's grilled and not fried is pretty healthy.
As I remember i actually lost weight. i was pregnant and my midwife made me start eating meat again, for the health of my baby.

Start slow. Where are you going?
Start with soups with broth that is from meat and add a tiny bit and build from there. It will go okay. Best wishes. Bless you for not wanting to insult your new host culture., yes, there will be plenty of other stress! Been there...email me if you wish. Karen
i was a vegetarian for years, and started eating meat, and even a very small amount made me sick at first. i don't think there is an easy way to add it back into your diet. just eat very small portions of meat while your body readjusts to digesting it.

i didn't gain any weight when i started eating meat again. i found that meat is a lot harder to digest. it felt kinda like i had to digest a big rock :(. yuck! i got used to it after awhile.

i'm a vegetarian again :).
Your digestive enzymes are about three days behind what you ate. That means that the first few times that you eat meat, if you eat a lot of meat, you will experience some gastric distress. Then once your body makes the enzymes to digest the meat, you will be fineI gained 40 pounds when I quit being vege and now I am trying to go back to being vege. Emotionally I fell sluggish.
I was a vegetarian during college. My doctor encouraged me to start eating some lean meat and dairy products again as I had become vitamin deficient and protein deficient and it was causing some problems. Once I started back, I found that within a year, I had transitioned back to a traditional diet. Take your time and reintroduce foods one at a time.

I did gain a little weight, but I had been slightly under for my height. Now I'm just right.
I was a vegetarian for a little more then 7 years, and I just this past month have started to eat meat again. I think it does make my stomache upset, but for some reason I've been craving it so I just started to eat it again. But it's starting to really gross me out again so I will probably go back to not eating red meat very soon.

As far as my weight, it has remained the same... I don't know wether that is normal or not, but that has been my personal experience.
I hope this helps!
yeah i was a vegetarian for 15 years. i didn't notice any change emotionally, but after i started eating beef i noticed that i started to gain weight.. and i felt more sluggish. but all in all it's worth it.. just start of gradually. it wont shock your system. my mother raised me as a vegetarian... my first bite of meat was from burger king... lol... if that didnt kill me than i think you'll be alright.
I was a veggie for 2 years and all i did was add a little meat like once every 2 weeks or so to my diet to start the process
I was a vegetarian for a while and unfortunately began eating meat again. It depends on how long you have been a vegetarian. There are enzymes in meat that you cannot break down now because you do not have the bacteria in your colon to do so. I would start eating light broths and gravies made from meat juices first, then after a couple of weeks start with fish and then make your way up to the red meats. I would seriously consider staying vegetarian- it is much healthier on your system and you should not let other people's cultures or countries dictate how you feel about a choice that you made long ago that you have stuck to. Vegetarians are true rebels who have decided to save themselves and the planet one person at a time starting with themselves. Good luck in your decision
Dear zooo,

I am a meat eater. I used to be a vegitarian. I had the same problem as you. I wanted to eat meat but i did not know what to do. What i did was one day i went to the supermarket and got a ittle meat snack like beef jerky or turkey jerky. I slowly ate some every day then i ate meat all the time. I did feel diffret tough. I felt much healthier. Yes... meat can be fattining... but it also has tons of protien and vitamins. You gian only about 5 lbs then you basicllay will stay the same unless you eat to much or to little fatining. When you do gain the couple pounds. DO NOT WORRY! It will not show and you do not have to tell anyone.

I hope my advice helps

Sincerly,
Julia
white meat (chicken, turkey etc. )is easier to digest, and is better or you.
start re-introducing that back into your diet ...

then, once your system has adapted to it, introduce small amounts of red meats. (beef, pork, etc.)

EDIT: "ehnkidu", FYI, in gastronomy, pork is traditionally considered a white meat, but in nutritional studies, it is usually grouped with beef as a red meat. Since this girl is asking about the NUTRITIONAL side effects, it would be accurate to consider it a red meat.
humans are omnivores...that means that we require certain things from food (meat) that vegetables cant give us. this also means that reintroducing meat to your diet wont be as shocking to your system as you think. your body knows how to break down meat. it always did. it always will. you have probably eaten a substantial amount of meat unknowingly unless you read the ingredient list on every single thing you eat. dried egg is a common ingredient in chocolate bars, so your body never forgot how to digest this type food anyway. most people who feel sick after eating meat (after not having had it for a long time) are actually feeling a psychosomatic reaction...no physical evidence of illness, it's in the mind...(notice that most of the people who didnt want to eat meat again felt sick? and the people who wanted to eat meat again took to the change without any problems?)
take is slow if you want to. go for a big steak if you want to. it's all the same to your body.
