Is it alright to do situps while your feet are under a couch...or to do a crunch?

Question:
My dad said when he was in the army they would have somebody holding their feet?..So I'd think its alright?

Answers:
That's the old-fashioned way of doing situps which most experts nowadays agree is useless. When you anchor your feet while doing situps, you're exercising mostly your leg muscles, not the abs.

Situps in general are not a very good exercise because of the huge potential of lower back injury. Even if you can do it easily, you're still doing a damage to your spine which will show up years later. Crunches are a much safer exercise for abs.
it is ok. this way you can focus on your abs instead of your balance.
