Most people who do crunches like this pull their bodies up with their arms, which is bad for your neck and defeats the whole purose of doing crunches. Instead, cross your arms over your chest or gently place your finger tips at your temples. Remember to mix up the ab exercises:

You can put your hands behind your head, but most people tend to pull on their neck while they do it. Long as you are practicing the proper form; you can place your hands at the base of your head.

Make sure to not lift with your head or neck.
It causes an un-natural flexion of the neck and can cause muscular and/or spinal damage.
