Can you improve your balance, or is it just something you're born with?

Answers:
Unless you have an inner ear problem you should be able to improve.
Ballet and karate' are two ways I can think of that I would recommend. I know mine improved while working with a Royal Korean Marine in Vietnam. I didn't start having any problem with it until I was diagnosed with diabetes and the associated neuropothy. It is a condition that kills nerves in your extremities. They are cold from lack of circulation and numb because of the neuropothy. Since a great deal of your balance is in your big toe (no kidding) a loss of the nerves feedback makes it hard for me to do simple things like pass a field sobriety test.
Bottom line get into something that requires a lot of activity while standing on one foot. Things like I already mentioned.
Good luck at it but you sound like a doer so you probably won't need much luck; just a lot of hard work.
balance can definately be learned.
If you think of a child, they learn balance when they learn to walk. I remember as a child, learning the balance beam. I had to learn how to balance on it!
skateboarding, rollerskating, snowboarding, ice skating are just a few more activities where you learn to balance.
I think if you pick up an aerobic program, or ice skating or something physical, your balance will improve.
practice makes perfect!!
You can always improve balance, you just have to practice at keeping it. Don't get me wrong, people are born with good balance, and bad. I also think it has to do with hand eye cordination. The best way is to practice.
You may need to have your inner ears checked. Perhaps something is out of whack or you have damage from an old ear infection, etc.
Balancing while walking is just normal. But when you are engaged in some sports, you can improve your balancing through constant correct practice.
its learned.. i had terrible balance until istarted doing chinese martial arts and i was forced to balance for at least 10 minutes on one leg per day..
helpsout a lot..
you can buy those goofy exercise balancing ball things places..
its like a half ball you stick on the floor and you can perch on to help out your muscles.
Balance can be improved and here is how you can do it. Get one of those big balls used for exercise. Sit on top of it and first raise one foot off of the ground for a count of 30 (or more). Then put that foot down and raise the other. If you can do this with your eyes open then close your eyes and do it. After you can do it for 1 or 2 minutes with your eyes closed raise the leg and foot straight out in front of you with your eyes closed. Do both feet. I have been doing this for a few years. It builds balance and new nerve tracks in your brain, which we all need as we age. Good luck!
