Do you think anorexia is JUST hurting the person or the family and friends too?

Question:
I know from experience that just because your friend is annorexic doesnt mean you arent being hurt by it. She constantly pressured me to eat , and yes I did give in some just so that I felt in some way she would be happy. It sort of depressed me. I mean I wont say that it is selfish of the people who are doing it because its very hard to control. I just wish that they would consider how much pressure and stress is put on the closest friends. Has anyone experienced this or have any opinions?

Answers:
This illness affects the family and friends and NOT the person because the person does not believe he/she has a problem until it is too late. There is no cure for this at the moment but hopefully, through time, there will be.
any kind of illness whether mental, emotional or physical affects everyone around that person in some way.
I think it hurts everyone around them becuase they hate seeing their loved one in that kind of position, i know i would.
It does affect family and friends and people around us.
Yeah because people around them worry too.
I'm underweight and people are constantly thinking i'm anorexic and i think it worrys them. And if you're friend is doing that then deifinitely.
Hmmm i think my friends think i'm lying about it though.
I know what you mean. It hurts and affect everyone who cares about you. People who love you can tell what's going on and from my own experience they want to help but is hard. Is hard on both because is a disease that you have to treat by therapy and a lot of support and your family and friends have to be understanding that is a step by step process and they can't just make you eat.
Yes anorexia hurts everyone who is close to that person who is suffering. My cousin is anorexic and she ended up going into cardiac arrest because she was so thin and thank God the doctors were able to bring her back. She could have died! She is still struggling with the illness (refuses to get help and when she is put into a center involuntarily she does whatever she has to do to get out and then returns to her old ways). Our family and her friends are in serious pain, we are suffering with her. We never know if this day is going to be her last. We never know if she is going to have children or what her future will be like or even if she has a future. Anorexia hurts everyone involved not just the person with the disorder.
i think especially yur parents and yur closest friends find it hard to see you tis way when yur depressed and wont do anything or eat anything and they might think it is partly their fault that u r this way so i think they r definitely hurting too sometimes more than u r
Yes a few of my friends wer dangerously underweight and i think that it does put a let of pressure and stress on not only themselves but their friends and family also. In addition, i think that it can negitavly effect anybody they come in contact with as if an impressionable teen saw an annorexic person then they might be incouraged to follow their unhealthy example. As we see within the fashion industry, these annorexic models put untold stress on themselves, their family and friends presumably, and also the millions and millions of impressionable young girls who see them on the tv or in magazines who decide that they also would like to be annorexic, therefore influencing and putting pressure and stress on to a whole new generation.

It isnt selfish to feel this way and maybe you should talk to your friend about it and incourage her to eat healthly instead of not eating at all - it will make her feel a lot better. Try to encourage her to go to her doctor for help and advice or confine in someone!
Remember, annorexia is a serious and life threatening illness so if your friend is a teenager then i wud advice tlkin to her parents - she is puting herself in serious danger!

x good luk x hope this helps
yes my friend was anorexic and of course i wanted to help her and when i told my mom about she didnt believe me. no one did until she went to the doctor. for a while she was telling people i had an eating disorder so people wouldnt see she was the one with the problem. then her mom would always be asking my if she was eating. i agree that it is really hard to control but i think people with the disorder should be open to treatment. it affects everyone in their life.
You need mental help. Do it for yourself and your loved ones. You are causing irreversible damage to your body, not to mention that anorexia makes people look unhealthy and unattractive. If you put as much dedication into eating healthy food and exercising you would not have body image issues. Please get some help!
Anorexia is an ILLNESS and YES it hurts EVERYONE!
It hurts the person suffering from it---frail, thin, under- nourished, eventually bone loss, osteoporosis, maybe difficulty having a baby (inability to get pregnant), irregular periods, etc... the list can go on and on.eventually the ultimate hurt--could be cardiac arrest and death. This disease hurts the one with it, the family members, the future spouse, the babies (if an anorexic person does give birth, think of the health problems that can be passed along),etc...YOU are in DENIAL if you think it only affects the person with it! Seek help NOW!! Your physical and emotional health depend upon it!(If it is your FRIEND with anorexia---be a true friend and offer her support! Go to the doctor with her, seek online guides on how to deal with anorexia, etc..
My opinion... is not opinion because (as you requested) I'm somebody who's experienced an anorexic loved one.

S.O.S. and LilyLouise are right on... the harm an anorexic does to others is way beyond worrying about whether or not they eat: it's about helplessly watching someone you care about slowly and painfully killing themself. And if you're close enough to try and help, it's also about being attacked visciously for trying to save their life. Yeh, that hurts.

Selfish? Well, that does involve opinion -- but hurtful? No doubt about it!
