Best time to eat carbs? much before exercise or after exercise?

Question:
what time of day is best to eat carbs? some say that eating it early is better because then u have the rest of the day to burn it off but i've also read that after exercise (which i do mid-afternoon) the rate at which ur cells take up glycogen (carbs) is faster- so which is it?
thanx for ur help!

Answers:
For the most part, both.

Carbs are important to have pre-workout for the energy to sustain you throughout your workout.

Carbs are also important to have post workout because carbs are absorbed quicker then (like you mentioned) and ensures that carbs are used for energy and not protein. This way, protein can contribute to your muscle gains.
Before you exercise. Carbs give you energy so your workout will be easier, and you burn them off at the same time.
Before is better. Make sure you're eating complex carbs found in healthy foods like whole grain bread and fruit, and not simple cards like those found in white bread, white pasta, and sweets.
after exercise you have to take in at least 30-60 grams of simple carbs , like a gatorade or something similar. the simple sugars rush nutrients into your muscles. it would also be could to have some complex carbs for breakfast (oatmeal is a good one). this will digest slow and give you energy thoughout the day. the rest of the time you dont really need carbs unless your trying to build muscle.
the 2 best times of the day are first thing in the morning and after training. in the am because the body has been fasting for many hours and insulin sensitivity is high. after training because once again insulin sensitivity is very high and the muscles are primed for nutrient uptake. exercise increases the number of glut-2 transporters on the muscle cell. the insulin response from the carbs will also help to further increase muscle protein synthesis reducing recovery time from exercise. you never have to worry about carbs being converted to a lipid when consumed at either of those times.
