Is it unhealthy for me to lose a pound a day?

Question:
OK, I weigh 235 ponds at the current moment. I have been cutting back on my food and eating less junk food. I still eat 3 meals, I am not starving myself or anything. I have lost a pound or more the last 3 days. Is this bad?

I dont know if you have ever seen that show the Biggest Loser...how do they do that healthy. They are really overweight and they lose like 10 pounds a week.

Is it ok for really over weight people to drop weight faster? i dont understand. I dont want to be unhealthy.

Thanks!

Answers:
The first four or five pounds are actually water weight, so it's OK. If you continue at that rate, you need to add some calories so that you only lose about 2 pounds a week. Otherwise you may be damaging your body.

As to the TV shows, I get angry every time I watch one. They do terribly risky things as far as exercise with people who are in no shape at all. But they do what looks good on TV. No it's not healthy for them to lose that much weight, but since when has Hollywood cared about health? On Fat Road last night, I got so mad at that trainer who was criticizing the woman for complaining of back pain. He said, "She has absolutely nothing wrong with her physically." Oh, really?! Try strapping a couple of cannon balls to your chest and walk five miles and tell me how your back feels? Especially since she hadn't walked more than a block in years. And what really bugs me is that the announcer on Biggest Loser is a nurse! She should know better.
Yes its fine. If you nervous ask a doctor.
ya, you should lose 1-2 pounds a week, but i do think heavier people drop weight faster, but still, just dont be anorexic
From what I understand, in the very beginning of weight loss, the rapid loss is due to water weight which comes off really fast, which is not a problem. That's why it gets harder to lose weight after you jump-start. Good luck, and I wish you all the best in reaching your goal!!
Generally no. Some days you might lose a pound but most of it is probably water weight and not fat.

Since you weigh 235 pounds you could probably lose 4 or so pounds a week until you drop to a lower weight and then it will probably be harder to lose more than a pound a week.

I'd focus more on what you're eating, how many calories you are taking in a day and getting exercise oh and drink lots of water, not pop or fruit juice. If you are doing that well the weight will come off without having to worry about weighing yourself a lot.
Yes, it's perfectly fine for you to lose weight that fast. There have been some Dr's. upset at that show because the people lose weight quickly instead of the "1 to 2 pounds a week" they've been spouting off for years. But there's no solid evidence that it affects you in the long run. Just look at the people on the show.

I'm a product of The Biggest Loser workout routine. When I started on my diet and workout, I was losing between 6 and 10 lbs per week...and I'm a female! I've kept it off and my body is toning up just fine, although I'll probably have a little lose skin because I was so heavy when I started. My Doc is amazed and says I'm probably healthier now than I've ever been!

JM
The people on the show do it by SERIOUS hard workouts.
I think your body will lose quickly at first, but will slow down considerably in a week or two.

Good luck, and keep up the good work!!
Hi there,

On average most people will lose 2-3 pounds per week. 10 to 12 lbs a month. Now, overweight men tend to burn more calories than an overweight female and thus will drop weight typically faster.

I am not sure how they do the weight loss of Biggest Loser, but I do know the Dr. Bernstein diet drops weight very rapidly. They use Vitamin B shots and potassium as well as a severely strict low calorie diet to do so. My guess the Biggest Loser does something along these lines.

As long as you are giving your body everything it needs, you shouldn't worry too much. Did you just start this diet by chance? Often you drop quickly at the start, but unfortunately it is often what is called "water weight." Then you settle into a normal rhythm of 2 lbs approx. a week. Drink lots of water and a good multi-vitamin.

Good luck! :)
