A high intake of fructose (fruit sugar) can indeed be harmful. There is no natural enzyme in the body to digest fructose so it persists into the lower gut where it is digested by intestinal bacteria. As a result you will suffer from from wind and loose bowels.
Other work has linked high fructose intake with obesity and coronary heart disease. Because it is not digested it can enter the blood stream and will cause the liver to release lipids into the blood stream.
