Question:
Obese elementary schoolchildren miss a couple more school days on average than their normal-weight classmates, according to a study that says being fat is a better predictor for absenteeism than any other factor.

The researchers from Penn and Temple University looked at 1,069 fourth- to sixth-graders for one academic year in nine Philadelphia schools, where teachers took attendance each morning. Based on body mass index, a standard measure of height and weight, each child was classified as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese.

Of 180 school days, researchers found that on average the normal weight students missed 10.1 days, overweight kids missed 10.9 days and obese children missed 12.2 days. For reasons that aren't clear, underweight children had the fewest absences — 7.5 on average.

I think overweight brings on sickness and whole lot more than and Avg. person. I know because I am overweight. And I'm 45 years old. I have lost 70 pounds. I also have diabetes. If you have never been obese. You have no clue what a child, teen or adult goes through. As a child it is up to the parents or gardians to help that child not to over judge them just encourage them to lose. Get them to talk about how they feel. Find the way to show them they can do a lot more and feel better if they lose the weight. Even smaller childern can tell you how they feel if they know you are truely listening to them. That goes for teenagers and everyone else. It is not a easy project. It is easier to gain than to lose. Kids don't get outside and play like they use to. The fast food Ind. Is growing faster every year. Look at TV!! Between show food, food. Makes human believe they are hungry when they are not. They go hunting for something to eat in front of the TV. Or pick up the phone call for PIZZA. I know I have been there as Adult. I ate at home all the time, when I was growing up. We had beans and taters, and beef we raised and pork. It is healthier. Plus we got out help worked in the garden we played outside. Or we would go for walks.
Today you can't get a kids off the games and computer long enough to know what is going on outside thier homes.
Today kids need to take gym everyday in school. From Elementary, middle, and High school. Every child doesn't need to be in sports. Just move, get some kind of exercise.
And make it fun! But then it is up to the Home how they eat.
I wonder why the heavy kids missed school? Junk food hangover?
interesting. i guess where the lazy fat kid steriotype comes from.
don't get me wrong. i dont think fat kids are lazy- its just that A STERIOTYPE>
Sounds rather out there to me. I wouldn't believe it... Even if it is true what does it matter if the fat kid misses .8 more school days than the skinny kid? Did they also show you the grades of the children? I bet the chubby kids did better even though they were gone. Whatever though, I guess it doesn't matter all that much.
