From all nuts Macadamia Nuts have the hardest shell and require special equipment for cracking
Macadamia Nuts come from Hawaii, so shipping is also a factor.
Cheers :-)
Because the majority of them are produced in Hawaii and need to be shipped into the mainland.
Dont they come from Hawaii?
Because they have to be shipped from Hawaii or Australia and it is not a little tiny nut...all nuts are expensive have you tried buying cashews or walnuts lately??I know it is a shock how
much it can cost. Guess its a gourmet food item.
They are expensive to purchase because they are expensive to produce. Depending on where you live they will be more pricey because they are usually imported from Hawaii. The fact that you are buying food in a book store doesn't help either.
If you could see the quantity of nuts produce by one tree and how much work is involved to process the damn thing you would not ask why it is so expansive, Everything that come in great quantity and easy to process are very cheap
Macademia nuts require a lot of water, and only grow prolifically in certain climates. Their shells are very hard and require special equipment to "crack" the nut.
Australia was the first country to grow macademia, with Hawaii second. At the present time, there are some macademia growers in California. Until this "nut" can be cultivated and harvested worldwide, the macadamia will continue to be one of the most expensive "nuts" sold.
