In most cases, even though it may not seem that way, there are other places that have fat also. The bulge in your stomach is just a concentration of fat.
In order to get rid of this, you must lose fat overall. In order to lose the fat, you must engage in aerobic activity. The best aerobic activity to lose the fat is brisk walking for 30 to 60 min. a day. After a couple of weeks, replace this with jogging. After several weeks of this, then the crunches will help.
Don't expect to do crunches without the aerobic activity and lose that stomach. This is a myth. You have muscles underneath, you must lose the fat in order to expose those muscles. The crunches will define the muscles and strengthen those and your back muscles. They, however, will not flatten your stomach.
DO NOT buy into the "you can target specific stomach muscles" line. It is not true. Just work overall in losing all your fat. There may not be alot, but what you do have is preventing you from having that flat stomach.
Be patient, and you'll have it before you know it.

Regular cardio 4-5 times a week, and pilates twice a week. Pilates is the best! Especially if you work on the machines, not just a mat class.
This is slightly different, but I've been trying to lose weight everywhere. After 3 weeks I've found I'm more toned by doing 200 sit-ups a day, and I've pretty much cut out chocolate. Hope that helps! Good luck!x
