What exercises are suitable for strengthening back and arms for female in her 60's?
Question:
Legs and rear end are OK thanks to cycling and walking but have recurring back problems and weak upper arms so would like to tone up these areas that have been neglected in recent years.
Something simple but effective that can be done at home.
Any recommendations for books or DVDs that would help.
Answers:
I started back to they gym specifically for back problems. For your back problems you need to do is work on your "core" which is a combination of your lower back and your abs (I'm not talking six pack here)..your upper body is primarilly comprised of back and chest----arms are broken into biceps(top) and triceps(back)...your best option is to join a gym as the machines will help you with these large muscle groups in a safe manner. Great that your trying to improve it all.plus weights will help greatly with preserving bone density.
Try chair yoga! Most yoga salons teach it and it should help.
If you have access to a swimming pool, there are a lot of exercises you can do, including lying on an air mattress and just paddling yourself around.
You might also try using canned goods as weights and holding your arms straight at your side and lifting them out to your shoulder level repeatedly for a few minutes in a set period of morning, noon and evening.
You have the right idea, don't strain yourself for a little while and build up the difficulty level a little at a time.
I recommend Marla Maples (Journey To Fitness).
They dont make this one anymore but I love it.You can still find it on Half.com extension of ebay. This video is non impact and works for all fitness levels. There is no jumping or fancy footwork. You can fast forward to the workouts you want because you stretch after each major muscle group workout.Guaranteed you will love it! And not expensive!
