Cavity near the gumline on front tooth.?

Question:
my husband has a cavity at the gumline on one of his front teeth. Can the dentist just fill it instead of getting a way too expensive crown?

Answers:
It would depend on the size of the cavity. If it is a small cavity there should be no reason why he needs a crown.

The reason why crowns are placed is because of a natural tooth that has aquired a large filling, or a root canaled tooth that will become brittle and may break. There are some other reasons, but these are most common.

A cavity at the gumline may have reached the nerve of the tooth and will require root canal. This will lead to a crown.

Minimal decay should only require a composite or, white filling. On the other hand.if he has already had a larger filling placed on that tooth, it would be a good idea to crown it. The reason being. if there is more material than natural tooth, the tooth is not as strong as a whole natural tooth.

Sometimes Dr.'s will place what they call an inlay or onlay instead of a crown, but in his case, this doesn't apply. These are placed on the back teeth.
