i wish these were like a forum so you could come back and ask new question in the same post. nehoo, thank you jennifer b for answering that, but i have two more questions. will it stay like that, or will this problem eventually go away (like the gums grow back over it or something)? and what causes this to happen (out of curiosity)?

Answers:
Gum tissue will not grow back, but you could have a gingival graft, but that isn't usually done for a small root exposure, especially on back teeth. The sensitivity will most likely go away slowly, as long as you aren't removing more tooth structure (by brushing too hard). But it is helpful to use the sensitivity toothpaste on a regular basis. This is all based on what I THINK is going on, but it is always a good idea to have a dentist check it out, just to be safe!!
You probably got this recession from the movement of the tooth during ortho treatment. Sometimes the tooth is either moved too fast, or moved a lot and the bone cant fill in the space. The tissue, when it is healthy, will shrink to find the bone. That is actually a good thing, because if it didn't then you would have a pocket (periodontal pocket) in the tissue and bacteria would fester and possibly cause more bone loss (periodontal disease). So although recession is sometimes a pain, it is actually much better than the other option!
If you have any other questions, ask away!!

Other Answers:
Gums don't grow back. They tend to receed. If you want gums back on the tooth, they will be transplanted there.
There is a lot that can cause this. Thin gums not receiving the right care will do this and infections of the gums make them separate and receed from teeth. you can help the sensitivity issue by using a sensitive toothpast- they have a different flouride in them that works great on sensitive areas
