When I open an envelope am I getting someone's spit germs all over my fingers?

they are all dead by the time you open it. germs don't last very long without moisture. Their DNA on the other hand is transferred to you. If that makes you any happier :-)

Most places use a speacial sealing machine. The letters aren't even touched by human hands until they get to the letter carrier for delivery.

use a letter opener because you are quite correct in your assumption about spit germs. Another thing to remember, when you lick an envelope you are possibly licking germs. Use a cloth or water dampened sponge.

yes. but usually most of them are long dead. some germs though can last for days or even weeks some times even months though its odd for them to last longer than a few minuets to an hour.

Sometimes you are and sometimes you aren't. There are some envelopes that are already sticky and you don't have to lick them, but some of the are not sticky when you get them and people do lick them. So, most of the time you are and most of the time you aren't.
