General Anesthesia Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Question:
I am electing to be sedated during the procedure.
What drugs are used to "put the paitent to sleep?" Do they actually sedate the paitent or induce amnesia?
I talked to my general dentist when getting panoramic X-Rays and he stated they pretty much give you intrevenious Valium. You are awake, but don't remember a thing.
Thank you for your time.

There it is, same as a dentist knows it.

I was out cold for the duration. Happy gas and then a shot that I didn't really feel. Then I woke up grumpy and in a different room, with a perscription for Valium.
Go to sleep man! I did it, and it was the coolest experience. It was like I blinked and it was time to go. Lots of fun being wheeled out to the car too ;-)
Ok ya I'm weird I know.
Men are such whimps. I had ten teeth pulled at one time, with only the local novacaine they give you.
You need to sit down and talk to your oral surgeon. Voice your concerns to him/her and if you're still not satisfied, don't do it until you are.
They had to put me out completely, or else I wouldn't let them near my mouth when I had my wisdom teeth extracted (I was 14), and now I'm 33 and I just had to have a molar removed. They had to put me out completely for that too, or else they weren't touching my mouth.
~They won't induce amnesia unless the procedure goes wrong. Why not be a man and just take a couple hits of novocaine so you can observe the whole thing. I did. Much shorter recovery period. I was smoking and eating 90 minutes after I got out of the chair.
I was out cold when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. I was awake with that numbing stuff for four more. I say go to sleep it was traumatic for me to be awake hearing the noises and seeing the dentist trying to get the teeth out.
Well if you are electing to be sedated, more than likely they will put you under General Anastesia. I had mine taken out about 6 years ago and I was out like a lite. I was totaly asleep and continued to sleep when my ride took me home.
Dental anesthetics are contained in such brand name products as Anbesol, Chloraseptic, Orajel, and Xylocaine.
When I was 19 I had all four of mine removed..two were not even erupted yet. I was given Sodium Pentabarbitol IV if I remember right. I was totally out for the entire thing. When I woke up, there was not a lot of pain or bleeding. I was given a prescription for Tylenol with Codeine.
I never used the Tylenol. The next day I was a little sore, but I went to work for a while.
That was the wost of it. It was not an unpleasant experience at all.
That was about 15 years ago, and they probably have better drugs. I would just make sure you will be totally gone and no of that "conscious sedation" you see on TV when the people are out of it and are screaming, but never remember anything. That seems wrong!!
Otherwise, hope it all goes well and there are no problems!
I actually just had my four wisdom teeth removed just two days ago. I was sedated during my procedure and I highly recommend it. First, they put me on laughing gas, and then hooked me up to an IV. The complete surgury took 20 minutes. I was completely unconscious, and the nurses actually had to close my eyelids. When I woke up, I was laying in a different room and but not quite thinking straight. I was then able to walk to my car where someone drove me home.
The doctor prescribed a generic form of Percocet for pain relief and Penicilin for prevention of infection.
