Is it normal for the gum area around the tooth to be swollen after a filling?
Question:
Answers:
Well, if the filling was around or near the gumline it is possible that your gums would still be sore -- sort of like you bit down on a potato chip and cut them. That is normal. Rinsing with salt water can help that heal faster and make it more comfortable to you.
If you start experience cold or heat (especially heat) sensitivity, or develop a dull ache (sometimes it is a throbbing ache depending on the person) that is constant, or swelling in the area (in your face where the tooth is -- swollen gums could be from the dentist catching your gums with the handpiece/drill) you definetly need to visit the dentists' office and get checked up.
Sometimes with deep fillings that have been filled multiple times the tooth experiences trauma. Trauma can cause the nerve of the tooth to begin to die. When this happens you usually develop an infection and an abcess in the tooth. Above are the symptoms of that.
Immediately your problem doesn't seem too bad, but if it doesn't get better in about two weeks, or it gets WORSE call the dentist to get it checked out.

It has never happened to me and i think 70% of my teeth must have fillings in now. Maybe the dentist caught the gum with his tools? Try not to mess around or prod it for a few days and see if the swelling goes, if not go back and see whats going on.
keep an eye on it,the same thing happened to me after a filling,it was infected, hurt like hell and cost me loads to get done,i also had a root canel done one time, that once again got infected, dont let it get too painfull,if it gets to a certain point the pain will be unreal, try gargling with tcp,if after a couple of days it doesnt get better,go back and get some antibiotics of the dentist, hopefully yours is just tender after the filling, good luck
