Is drinking from a straw advisable after getting your wisdom teeth pulled out?

Question:
I've heard rumors that it will creat blood clots or something of that sort.

Answers:
You know, I have told all my patients not to drink using a straw for the last 16 years. The reason is because lowering the pressure in your mouth "sucking" causes stuff in higher pressure areas to flow into your mouth. Drinks flow in from the cup and blood flows in from the socket. You don't want to disrupt the blood in the socket. It is your best band-aid. If you lose it then only bare bone is left and that is very painful."dry socket". So, if you are border line "and you can never know this" then you might take a suseptible clot over the edge and then suffer for about 5 days.

You only need 36 hours of extra care and then use good judgement for the next day. You are home free after that.

Other Answers:
No, you shouldn't. It's not that it will CREATE blood clots; rather, it can DISLODGE the clots that form in the hole where your tooth used to be. Without the clot, the gums never heal over, and you wind up with an open empty socket. This is called "Dry socket," and it's a very bad thing.

No, no, no, no, no. Your job for the first 24 hours is to protect that blood clot. The suction from drinking through a straw is a very bad thing. But. If it's been more than a couple of days since your tooth was removed, you're probably okay to go ahead.

dont do it, i smoked agianst what the doc told me and from what i've heard its the same as using a straw, lucky for me i only got one dry socket and YES its extreamly painful. I wouldn't wish that kind of pain on my worst enemy. Do what the doc says this is one time its important.
