The plastic guards from Walmart might work, the dentist made custom ones that fit my teeth. I got 2 sets, thin and thick. I wore them for awhile, pain gone. When the pain returns, rarely, I wear them for a night, and pain gone.
Let you jaw rest for awhile. No gum,eat soft foods, avoid chewy foods like meat, try the cheap guards from Walmart.
Try Motrin type anti-inflamatory, aspirin would work if you can take it.
Some people just have it, I got mine from grinding my teeth at night. I was not aware of doing that, the dentist thought it might be so. The idea was if I tried the guards, and the pain stopped, then the diagnosis was teeth grinding. He was right.

Many reasons for how it starts.
I got it from grinding my teeth at night.my dentist said you can get it from chewing too much.don't chew gum! Its terrible. I had lockjaw for 3 days and I thought I was going to starve to death or go crazy! It's a genetic issue where the joints in the back of your jawbone slip and create periodic swelling and pain, not to mention your teeth may at times not come together properly.
All you can do is exercise your jaw however your dentist or orthodontist recommends and take medication to relieve the pain and swelling when and if it occurs.
I'm in the minority of men who suffers from it, so you have my sympathy. really i do not know if this would work but you might try using a mouthguard bought at walmart and just see if wearing it at night keeps you from clenchin- i doubt your dentist or orthodontist would make any thing like this for you since you are in braces and they want your teeth to move even during the night ever so slightly- the kind that you can get at walmart comes not custom fit obviously and you might can cut it to fit over your braces.
if you can get one to fit your mouth - sleep with it in place and see how you feel the next day- good luck
Is not an uncommon condition.. if you have an over bite, as well as the other symptoms you mentioned.. is pretty suggestive of the origination of the problem is one that can be detected by pressure at the base of the skull to determine the level of discomfort there.. further, should you find tenderness in the sutures of the skull, it confirms the other findings.. there is treatment for such a condition. It won't be corrected by working with the mouth.
If this is the situation in your case, you can email me for further thoughts on the subject. have you had dental surgery or take the drug fosomax ( for bone loss) in the last 2 months?
