Is private dentistry in the UK worth the money??

Question:
I am from the US, and after having visited an NHS dentist in Edinburgh, I was pretty disappointed and a VERY nervous about having them do anything major to my teeth (I live here now so I need a permanent dentist). I am considering going private for my care, but is it really much better than public, and if so, why? I know the dentists are all trained the same whether they are public or private, so how do I know my private care will be better (and if it is better, will it compare to the excellent treatment I receive in the US)?

Answers:
I'm a dental nurse in the UK, and work in both private and NHS surgeries. If you go private you do get a better standard of care.
ie better materials, more time taken, better shade matches for crowns, bridges and dentures. NHS work is a pile of sh*t compared to private work. Its worth while talking to people who see a private dentist and see if they can recommend a good one to you. Ive heard about dentistry in the USA and Ive been told that its excellent. Good luck.

Other Answers:
certainly get better care with private dentists . the products they use as well are quality , nhs dentist are always counting their pennies , and making things as cheap as possible .

i had a filling with a nhs dentist , it fell out in 2 weeks , so i went to a private one to have the same tooth filled and the filling is still there 6 months later hoope this helps u
Yes, I needed to have my 4 lower front teeth out due to a mountain biking accident, and all the NHS were willing to give me was a denture to replace them, not really suitable as I'm only 29...

Through my private dentist I had 2 implants fitted and I have 4 permenantly fitted false teeth now, which people don't even know are false, and it's come to the point when I don't think about them any more...

It did cost £7k which is a lot of money in anyone's eyes, but the final result is perfect, the care and support was undeniably better than with the NHS, and I would recommend going private anyday...
