Besides coffee/tea stains, what could cause your tongue to darken in color?

Question:
Vitamin deficiencies? Illnesses? Anyone experience this before? My tongue is splotched with very dark brown spots ... I'm concerned!

And no, it's not from anything I've eaten or drank.

Answers:
hum allergies can cause a darkness on the tongue...

maybe you have a virus and not feeling it yet.

if they're those little red spots that are a red color that's normal... comes mostly from (in my case) medications and drinking too much soda. :D

here's some sites that may guide you in the right direction?

these just basically pin point the same two problems.

i say see the dentist and your doctor.

for the best advice.

it may be serious and a sign of problems in the body or it may be something very simple and curable by just changing dental hygene.

good luck i hope it's nothing too bad.

it could be a sickness or desies, so if thats whats happening, medhelp on youqa.coms will help. it is possibly sugrful candy, popcicles and un-natrul dye.
I read about a hairy tongue disease that causes that to happen...

I hope you don't have this. That's gross. GO TO THE DOCTOR!
don't sweat. smoking is definitely the most common cause. another uncommonly known cause is pepto bismo. it's the bismuth in it and it can even cause the dark spots to grow like hair!

i'd go see the dentist just to be sure its nothing but i wouldn't be too worried if i was you.
my daughter ate a bunch of pepto bismol tablets once and we called poison control, they said her tounge would darken but not to worry it was a side affect of something that was in particular types of medicines
