Is the rumor that a good dentist can perform a tooth extraction with only a ballpoint pen and a lighter true?

Question:
"Good" is probably the key word...

Answers:
I think I would steer clear of any dentist that would use this method to extract a tooth. He may be working out of a trailer. There is a lot that goes into extracting a tooth. You have to have some sort of anesthesia/novocaine. The dentist has to make sure you are properly numb, and there are special tools, (elevators and forceps) designed to make the extraction easier for you and the dentist. Then you have to have proper post-op instructions, gauze etc. Not to mention if sutures are involved you have to come back and have those removed unless they are dissolvable stitches. Stay away from pens and lighters. Goodluck!
