Will braces/invisiline improve skills with a brass instrument?

Question:
Hmm they don't have a very large music subcategory to put questions like these in.
I'm 15 and play various brass instruments especially the trumpet, will getting my teeth straightened help me play better?

Answers:
It depends on how poor your current tooth alignment is. I'm a dental assistant, and I played in concert/marching/jazz bands all throughout middle and highschool, so I feel especially qualified to answer this question! I can tell you that if you have a severe overjet (what is commonly referred to an 'overbite' where the top teeth protrude too far in front of the bottom teeth (1-3 mm is normal.) then you may have an easier time fully forming your embouture to the mouthpiece if you have your teeth fixed and aligned better. The same is true if you have an UNDERjet where your bottom teeth stick out in front of the top.

However, in order to have invisalign done you have to have your second set of permanent molars grown in. The age that typical is completed by is 14, but it varies from person to person. You would have to check with an Invisaligh certified practitioner to see whether or not you are eligible.

Traditional braces would make it near impossible to play your instrument. With your mouth pressed up against a mouthpiece with those metal brackets on your front teeth would *KILL*. LOL, you would have to start playing woodwinds!

Hope that helps, dear.
