I had many, many people tell me it was not painful.BUT.it was thee single most painful experience of my life. I had an absess tooth and was on antibiotics for a week before the surgery. It was miserable, I cried like a baby! I would definitely ask if you can get some laughing gas.

umm.sad to say, but VERY. The procedure itself is not bad (unless you're allergic to Novocaine, which some people are) but after the Novocaine wears off, prepare to buy lots of oral numbing cream.
Not really, especially considering the dentist (or endodontist) is actually removing any sensation with the removal of the root (the nerves). The real discomfort is expereinced at the commencement of the procedure as the dentist is drilling through the tooth enamel.

its done in two part and i looked forward to the 2nd visit i loved that laughing gas ! :) lol never felt a bit of pain. i even tried to watch in the dentist's glasses him drilling my tooth lol
I think people make more out of it then it really is. Maybe it's all the idea of what is actually happening that makes it seem worst.
Not with the right dentist. I have had two particularly nasty root canals (damage wise) and I felt no pain. This is surprising, for when I was a kid I always felt pain during cavity drilling. I realized that it was the application of the anesthetic that causes the most difference in people's pain during oral surgery. If you don't have a good doctor with good knowledge of the nerves inside the jaw and mouth, you might wind up with a bit of hurt.
However, with my dentist, all I had was a sore jaw from keeping it open so long. Check with other patients at your dentist's office, you might be surprised.
Getting shot up with Novocaine is the hard part. The dentist has to put a lot of doses deep into your jaw, cheek, and sometimes the roof of your mouth. Once you are numbed up, no pain, except around your gums when the Novocaine wears off.

Not if you have anesthetic. Once, a long time ago I had one without it--we lived in the country of Turkey--and that wasn't too cool.
But I just had one about two weeks ago, and naw. They don't hurt. Your gums will be a little sore for a day or so because they work on you and they give you a couple shots of anesthetic there.
Be sure you get a crown put on tho' otherwise you'll probably lose the tooth in the end.
Oh, and a root canal doesn't hurt half as bad as that tooth will if you DON'T get it done.

not wilst its being done as the tooth is anithitised sent to sleep as are the surounding nerves,it will mean severall visits to you dentist,first the dead or damanged nerve has to be removed,your dentist will,x ray the tooth to cheeck the depth of the root to make sure he gets it all,but without hitting the nerve,after the root is removed he will then pact it with antibiotics,and place a temperory filling in ,this inables any infection to be cleared up,he might need to repeat this a few times before its ready for the perminant filling,allthough there can be some disscomfort between visits,as the infection clears,but i can assure you none of this is as bad as what your experiancing right now,so dont worry your feel so much beter after your first treatment,i know ive had three done over the years.
i had one and it didn't hurt one bit. i didn't feel a thing and had no idea what the doc was doing.
