When is it time to get surgery for TMJ?
I've had it for a year, and hate it. It honestly bothers me all the time. It's gotten worse. I'll be getting a night guard in a few weeks, and I hope that helps. But what if I have to get surgery? When is it time to get the surgery?
If you are a dentist or work in a dental office? Or maybe just someone that knows?
Answers:
Surgery should be the last result. Please try everything possible to avoid it. Try to stay away from gum or anything sticky or chewy. Try advil. The nightguard should help. That will take some of the pressure of your joint. Sometimes they will inject a steroid into the area. We have dealed with alot of TMJ or TMD patients I have only seen a few that needed surgery. Make sure they also take X-rays of the area. They can tell alot from that. Good Luck!

The nightguard will be a huge help if you follow all of the directions your dentist gives you. In the meantime, do not chew gum or anything sticky, no hard or tough foods, do not open your mouth wide even to yawn, and use warm moist heat to help alleviate any pain. Only go through the surgery if you absolutely have to since it is complicated and the dental community considers it a last resort. You may want to see a dentist who specializes in TMJ disorders if the nightguard does not help. However, you will be amazed at how much the nightguard helps you.looking for a pro bono dentist in missouri, arkansas, memphis, Tn.?
If you want to forgo surgery, try using chiropractic help...It helped me, and I haven't had any pain for at least ten years...Anything's better than going in for surgery...
Has your dentist given you an orthodic to treat your TMJ? My dentist helped me with mine without any surgery...I know of a great dentist in Manhattan. Dr. Andrew Turchin.
