Depends on the area in which you live. Now that being said, dental assistants do not usually require a post high school education, and unfortunately even when it does the wage is not that much higher. They obviously make more than someone in say retail, but I don't know of anyone that can live a good life being just an assistant, unless their spouse also works, or they have a second job. Also in the dental field, you are lucky to be offered medical insurance, so that would be another negative.
In the dental field no one works a 40 hour week, well I am sure someone does,but it is not common. Usual week is about 32-36 hours, so if you check into hourly wages, you must figure that in too. This is because not many dentists work 5 days a week, usually they take a Wednesday or Friday off, it is quite nice!

Well I do not know of other countries, but it is far more we as dentist earn in Venezuela.

As a dentist working for the goverment (in a municipality), 6 hs a day, I earn the equivalent to 293 US$ a month (minus deductions). that makes it 3.516 US$ a year.
Our higenists earn more or less 232 US$ a month.

My daly salary is roughly 10 US$ (remember, minus deductions), where as a maid can earn an avarege of 16 US$ a day.

We do get food tickets to the value of more or less 74 US$ a month and no, it is not sufficient. a market can cost 2 or 3 times more.

And no, that is not a living there nor here.
