Male dental assistants?

Question:
I was just wondering if there were any male dental assistants. My wife is a dental assistant and every Dentist we've seen only have females working with them.

If you are a male dental assistant is it weird for you?

Answers:
There aren't many male dental assistants and there also aren't many male dental hygienists, but there are some! I would think there are more male dental hygienists than assistants, and there are maybe 1 or 2 graduating a year in each hygiene program. In mine there were none as was the year before and year after, but I know of one in the area.
I guess it is rare because it was started like nursing, a more compassionate role that a female is better at. But now there are many male nurses, so maybe it isn't too far off. The one thing about dental assistants though, they don't make a lot of money and it doesn't usually require any special education. So it is more of a younger persons career or someone that isn't require to make the majority of money, which (although changing) is usually a woman. Plus an assistant has to put up with the idiosyncrasies of the dentist, and lets face it, women can put up with a lot more than men before we go crazy.

Other Answers:
being a male dental assistant is probably the same as being a male medical assistant and/or male nurse.

I have seen male dental assistants before I am personally not a dental assistant, but my orthodontist was a male and so was his assistant. He was a great guy and made getting braces and the whole process not so bad. He is the only one that I have come across though!

I work with two male dental assistants, but it's a female dominant field for the most part.

i would hire a male any day! putting up with females all day is like the midas touch. awesome at first but it gets really old. i had a male assistant once who was fresh out of the military and he was a damn machine. as a male dentist, my suspicion is that men just would not like the job because there is so much cleaning involved.

i'm a dentist

I am male, and I was an assistant for several years while I served in the navy. It wasn't weird at all. In fact, there are days that I miss it. Of course I didn't stray too far from the field since my discharge, I now own and operate a dental laboratory, but I contribute most of my knowledge from sitting chairside with the dentist, and in my field, it doesn't hurt to be comfortable in the operatory for when I need to be there to help with the prepping of a large case. When I was a dental student, I got a hygiene license (RDH) and worked in private offices for my junior and senior years. EVERYONE assumed that I was a doctor. After the first couple of weeks of correcting them when they called me "doctor," I just gave up.

I worked with a male dental assistant in someone else's office for about a year. In fact, he was a dental student at the time. Personally, I didn't have a problem working with him. In fact, it was great, because he had more of an appreciation for what I was doing - or sometimes trying to do. When he went out to get the patient, people asked where their "regular" doctor was, assuming that he was the doctor and suggesting by their questions that they did not want to go into the treatment room with him. He always, always had to tell them that he was not the new dentist, but he was "only" the assistant. This had to be weird for him. There were times when the dynamic was a little weird, though, between the three of us in the room - doctor, assistant and patient. I think people are more used to turning to the female assistant in times of fear when they need comfort. This is especially true of children.

So, I didn't really answer your question, because I don't know from personal experience, but maybe this answer will help you a little.
