Are there any dental schools that give points to applicants who are already a hygienist?

Question:
I have a friend who's a hygienist right now with already a bachelors degree in biology but that was a long time ago. GPA only 3.0. Now she'd like to go further and go to dental school. 411 please. thanks.

Answers:
Dental schools look favorably for those who are dental hygenists or assistants. A 3.0 GPA, to be honest, is on the low side; average GPA for dental school admittants is ~3.4-3.5

Recommendations: Take a year's worth of extra science courses to boost the GPA. Schools will be impressed if a marked improvement is shown. Take the DAT and make sure it's well above average (ie. score of 20+). Good luck!
I would not say they "give points," per se, but I imagine (correct word choice) that they would look upon you with slightly more favor, because you really know that this is what you want to do. Dental schools want to admit successful candidates and you have proven yourself already.

I don't know if you need to improve your GPA or science GPA (And I mean - I really do not know...), but I'd say apply and see if you can get an interview. This will be a fact-finding mission for you as much as anything else. Let them know that you really want to get into "X" University Dental School and see what recommendations they make about improving your chances. If you don't make it, at least you'll know what you have to do. Yes, you'll have to pay an application processing fee, but it's cheaper than taking 5 or 6 science courses if you do not have to do that.
