why shouldn't young children use adult toothpaste?
Question:
Answers:
Unitl a child is able (and willling) to spit on command and not swallow fluoride toothpaste they should be using a non-fluoridated toothpaste. This is because while they have their primary teeth in their mouth their adult teeth are beginning to develop in the jaw and when they swallow fluroidated toothpaste they are ingesting too high a level of fluoride and that can result in the formation of white marks on the surface of their adult teeth (fluorosis). Fluoride is a wonderful thing in minute quanitites - it has done more than almost any other individual ingredient to strengthen teeth and help avoid decay. but more isn't better. There is an optimal amount and too much can cause problems.
i think they say the flouride content is higher, but adult toothpaste is ok when a pea size amount is used.
