My son has an absess in his gumline above a decayed tooth?

It depends on how old your son is and which tooth it is, among other factors. Please post more information as an addition to your question and you might get a helpful answer.
Now I will speculate. If you see the abscess at the gumline, it is most likely a baby tooth. If an x-ray shows bone destruction between the roots of the tooth (for a back tooth) or root resorption from the abscess (front or back tooth), the dentist will probably recommend removing the tooth. If things look close to normal in the x-ray and the tooth is not due to be lost for a couple of years or more, the dentist will probably recommend the child's version of root canal treatment, which is fairly easy and relatively inexpensive.
In any event, you need to get your son to the dentist before he has pain. He may need an antibiotic (maybe not), but he definitely needs something done for his tooth.

I worked as a dental assistant for four years. My former boss used to give an antibiotic first of all. If it is a primary tooth (baby tooth) it may need to be extracted if the antibiotic is not effective. If it is a permanent tooth, a root canal is a possibility. Good luck!
treat the abcess with antibiotics and then treat the tooth
The dentist may do incision n drainage or give antibiotics. if the tooth is not possible to b saved, then it would b extracted. If its a milk tooth which needs to b retained to maintain space for the permanent tooth, pulpectomy followed by a filling can b done. if its a permanent tooth, RCT would b done to keep the tooth in its place.
first the infection needs to be treated with an antibiotic, then the cavity can be filled or if too bad may need pulling or a root canal if it is a permanent tooth
