Is it common for a retainer to give you a severe lisp?

Question:

Here's the deal.....I had my braces for three years, but my ortho told me "you're teeth aren't going anywhere, they're sey....but wear your retainer.

I wear it all day and all night save for a few hours a day at most and I build up lots of saliva and lisp really bad, like Daffy Duck.

Is this supposed to happen, and did my ortho really hint that I should wear it at night?

Yeah, its a bad lisp. My orthodontist only makes me do nights... but that could be just him. Call the ortho and ask him. You'll learn pretty quick how to talk around it, but it never really goes away. The fact is, and always will be, that something's stuck in your mouth! The pains we take for beauty - eh?
