Surgery for constricted palate?

Question:
Can anyone tell me where I can find information for this surgery? Was just told my 14 y/o daughter may need to have this done. The dentist said that he was not an oral surgeon and that I would need to talk to one to find out for sure. He was not able or willing to give me details on this procedure.

Answers:
Talk to an orthodontist before you talk to a surgeon. If palatal expansion can be done using a non-surgical approach, your 14 year old and you will both be happier. The appliance that daddysnurse is talking about may still be useful, but that depends on the exact situation in each partilcaular case. It doesn't "break" the bone, per se, but expands it along the center by opening up the suture line. Her description of the procedure is a good one.

Other Answers:
I am a little unsure if this is the same thing that my sister went through when she had orthodontic work or not- she had to have a spreader put into the roof of her mouth and each night the spreader had to be "turned" with a little pin to make it expand. After it had been turned enough times the bone broke and the appliance was kept in place until it healed giving her a larger amount of room in her upper mouth. I haven't heard of surgery, but things may have changed since then. I would definitely consult an orthodontist.
